Location, location, location
This home is located in the lush Southwest Hills neighborhood just off of Humphrey Blvd. The tree lined streets and sloping hills offer a serene quiet setting close to downtown. This was one of the many houses that Allison Dean developed in the neighborhood. Dean seemed an interesting personage. He was a real estate agent and developer who seemed to be forward looking in many ways. We’ve mentioned his interest in story snippet here (BTW we have a small update to that snippet coming up soon), did some other small houses using minimal construction techniques with a mid-century modern flavor, and it appears he handled a resale of the Jan De Graf house which is Portland’s only home designed by Richard Neutra (Van Evera Bailey was the local supervising architect for the project). Dean was an amateur actor active in the Portland theater scene and also a writer.
These houses he built in the Southwest Hills area are of a more conventional order in terms of design and construction techniques. And they are substantial in size and amenities. This home was purchased during development by the brick supplier for Dean’s development, Albert Shinnerer, which might explain the beautiful and massive brick fireplace wall in the living room. The Shinnerers had architect Marvin Witt do some alterations in 1966.
The main level features high vaulted living room with a floor to ceiling window wall. The natural wood ceiling fills the space with an even warm light. The large and open kitchen has an eating area connected to the expansive wrap around deck. Three bedrooms are on the main level, the master with its own bath and deck.
The lower level is daylight with high ceilings, a full bathroom, laundry room and two large undeveloped spaces with a fireplace and multiple doors to the outside. The lower level offers a perfect canvas for someone to come in and dramatically add to the homes living spaces.
